“India: EdTech Start-ups see record buyouts this year”
Headlines like these have flooded the newspapers we read and the social media applications that we use. All these headlines talk about the growing industry of Edtech. The 'online learning' phenomena is growing immensely and it is a trend that is here to stay. To the uninitiated, this might come as a surprise because India as a country has always banked on traditional methods rather than giving a chance to something new. But the world is changing and so is India. Today 63% of the Indian population has access to the internet and the growing competition in the education sector has started a trend amongst students of going the extra mile to stand out from their counterparts. The Indian EdTech industry was booming since the year 2018, but the current pandemic induced lockdown has acted as a catalyst to take this industry to new heights. According to a report by RedSeer and Omidyar Network, India has mapped a growth in usage of EdTech platforms from 2019 to 2020. The study revealed that the users, which were broadly divided into three categories - paid, free and unique users - have seen an increase, with the user base doubling from 45 million to 90 million.
Why are people preferring online learning?
With the onset of the coronavirus triggered lockdown, people were compelled to sit at home and go on with their lives. This left people with no choice but to give online learning a chance. While all other industries are looking for ways to pivot and stay afloat in the economic crunch, the Edtech industry on the contrary is growing manifolds. The 'New Education Policy' proposed by the Indian government also lays emphasis on using technology and online learning as a modern means of education. Along with all of these reasons, the main reason people prefer online learning is the accessibility. One can learn anything they want, at any time of the day according to one's convenience.
Online Learning in India
Today Edtech startups like BYJUs, Unacademy and Vedantu offer several courses which cover almost every niche of learning. The Edtech industry had a very slow growth at the start but has been booming since the past few years. Indians have embraced the comfort and the ingenuity of learning from home which has led to BYJUs becoming the 'Most valuable Edtech Startup' in the world as well. With over 90 million customers and more than 2 billion in funding from international conglomerates online learning in India shows potential of world dominance.
Why should you choose Online learning?
1) It is extremely convenient and hassle free. All that is required is an electronic device and an internet connection.
2) Unlike traditional learning methods, online learning can be accessed by anyone who is keen to learn.
3) Learning can happen at your own pace. Moreover, there is no deadline that needs to be followed.
4) Online learning is also a blessing in disguise for individuals who weren't able to complete their education before and are open to gaining knowledge now.
5) It also gives access to the best educators in the country or sometimes even the world all at one place.
6) Online learning is one of the few ways by which one can keep learning irrespective of the circumstances.
In conclusion, online learning is a trend that is here to stay, and the quicker you adapt to it, the more you learn.
